Asia Pietrzyk’s awesome art

The other day this lovely and talented Polish illustrator and designer called Asia Pietrzyk e-mailed me, and we also started following eachother on Pinterest. It turns out she lives in Stockholm now, and amongst other things she shares my interest for graphic design of mainly the 1950’s and 1960’s. I am so impressed by her portfolio which is filled with beautiful illustrations and clever designs, where you often can see her love for the past but with her very own and unique sense of style! She also has a really nice blog and an Etsy shop where you can buy some of her prints. I suggest you head on over there right now!

70’s inspiration from Etsy

Found here.

I’m gonna kick off this week with some lovely 1970’s inspiration from Etsy, since that’s the kind of mood I’m in right no. Sometimes I just can’t get enough of ruffles, platforms, clogs, folklore embroideries, printed highwaisted cotton skirts, halternecked maxi dresses, and whatnot! With my hair having grown out to be quite long now, I just wanna put these clothes on, get my guitar and join First Aid Kit on tour. Since that is not likely to happen anytime soon, I will at least put something similiar on, leave my guitar at home, and go see Emmylou Harris on Saturday. Not too shabby that, not one bit. Saturday cannot come soon enough.

a small breather

So I guess I forgot to mention I am taking a week off, more than anything trying to stay offline, which is going so so. But the intention is good. And today we finally got some proper summer heat and had supper outdoors in the backyard, which was unusually quiet since most of the neighbours are on vacation. Our little Izzy is getting bigger and bigger, and is still the most adorable thing when she sleeps, predictably wanting to lie on top of everything. I hope everyone is enjoying their summers so far!

Grady McFerrin’s divine design

Pinterest discovered artist of the week: Grady McFerrin. I love this Brooklyn based illustrator and designer’s use of colour, the mix of vintage and modern features in both pictures and typography, as well as the handdrawn lettering he truly masters. Perfection is one word to describe it, in my book of “Artists I Admire”. A book that is getting bigger and bigger ... And of course I love each and every designer that works with the fabulous The Decemberists!

Andrew Wyeth and The Walking Dead

Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) is one of the great American realist painters, whose work I will surely never grow tired of looking at. Looking at some of his paintings online this morning, it suddenly hit me how much they remind me of The Walking Dead. That might obviously sound bizarre, especially if you haven’t watched this zombie tv show, but it turns out I’m not the only one having made that comparison. As you can read here, writer, director and producer Frank Darabont, has given it some thought. There is something threatening, yet serene, abandoned, yet haunted about Wyeth’s depicted scenes, and even if they are mere painted moments it’s as if time stands still – literally – in them. That is also the exact same feelings I get when watching The Walking Dead, which we did a few weeks ago. It has such a slow narrative, that really creeps under your skin, and you know the most horrible thing imaginable might happen at any second. I wasn’t at all prepared to get as into it as I did, especially since I generally don’t like post apocalyptic stories, but now I feel obsessed and cannot wait for October when season 3 starts. Eventually I will have to read the comics too, but for now I dare not spoil the continuation of the next season ...
